Sustainable?

Overview:

Senior capstone

Goals:

The Champlain college capstone project gave me the opportunity to engage in a self-directed experience within my professional program of Graphic Design, consciously integrating my broader education from the Core Curriculum with my specialized program knowledge. The capstone encompass a component focused on professional ethics and a self-assessment and self-reflection aspect. After my four years at Champlain, I found an area of design I felt passionate about and am still to this day trying to find ways to integrate into my practice: Sustainability.

Sustainability in Design: Cultivating a Brighter Future

The concept of sustainability in design isn't just a buzzword; it's a call to action that seeks to revolutionize the way we teach design and redefine the essence of being a proficient designer. The 'Sustainable?' campaign is a passionate endeavor aimed at sowing the seeds of sustainability within the hearts of design educators, thereby wielding their influence over both present and forthcoming generations of designers.

The paramount objective is to convey the pressing urgency and profound significance of effecting this transformative shift in our approach to design right now, rather than postponing it for the future. As a former design student, I can attest to the profound impact that educators have on shaping our perspectives and worldviews. It is precisely this influence that drives my aspiration for this campaign: to inspire design educators to initiate dialogues about the unsustainable conventions that our industry has normalized over time.

By fostering these conversations, we aim to equip the new wave of designers with the awareness and determination required to catalyze positive change within our field. In essence, the 'Sustainable?' campaign endeavors to empower design educators to be the catalysts for progress, and in doing so, to steer the course of our industry towards a brighter, more sustainable future.

Building the brand

Crafting a compelling brand identity is the cornerstone of any successful campaign. It's the visual and conceptual anchor that captures attention, communicates purpose, and leaves a lasting impression. The art of creating a brand identity involves an exploration of design principles rooted in rich traditions, such as the time-tested elegance of Swiss design.

Incorporating these principles not only lends a sense of timeless sophistication to our campaign but also serves as a bridge between the past and the future. It's a tribute to the enduring wisdom of design history while fostering innovation and creativity. The importance of brand identity in our campaign is not just about aesthetics; it's about creating a memorable and meaningful connection with our audience.

Creating the Conversation

Even though the event was not initially within the scope of our campaign, it exemplifies the core principle we champion: the importance of starting the conversation. Creating a platform for open dialogue, where students can engage with experts in the field, delving deeper into the vital topics that their design educators are imparting.

This panel discussion is more than just an extension; it's an opportunity to ignite meaningful discussions, to ask questions, and to glean insights from those who are at the forefront of the sustainability movement. It's about fostering an environment where curiosity is welcomed, and where the seeds of change can take root. Join us in embracing the importance of starting the conversation and be a part of the transformation towards a more sustainable future

Marketing

The 'Sustainable?' campaign employed a clever guerrilla marketing tactic by strategically placing stickers around campus and downtown areas. These stickers not only encouraged people to question everything in their surroundings but also served as a promotion for our upcoming event. By sparking curiosity and promoting sustainability, we aimed to engage our community in a thought-provoking dialogue about the world around us.
